Pei Design

A few months ago I received an email from Pei Pinney of Pei Design, wanting to know if I was interested in photographing her new line of stationery. Of course I was! Her products were so cute! I was so giddy with excitement and couldn’t wait for the shoot. Pei debuted her line last month at the National Stationery show in New York to great reviews. Her online shop will be available this fall. In the meantime, here’s some cuteness and some all around amazing cards. Stay tuned for more photos once the shop launches! And a special thank you to Britni Wood who brought her amazing styling skills to this shoot.

Wedding photo booths

I love wedding photo booths! This past weekend I was at a friend’s wedding in Sedona and set up a wedding photo booth for her and her guests. To set up the wedding photo booth, all I needed was  lights, a camera, a backdrop (cool idea! you can use a curtain with a pattern that you  like and that matches your wedding colors) and to make the photos more fun we also added some props and disguises like mustaches, glasses, smoking pipes, wigs and hats.

The guests had so much fun taking photos of themselves and the bride and groom will have a special personal photo album that they can look back on.

Here are some of my favorites from the wedding photo booth that we set up.

Album by Queensberry!

My new Studio Sample album arrived today and I’m in LOVE! It was crafted by Queensberry, a family owned album manufacturer in New Zealand. The style that I got is called Duo and it combines Matted and Digital pages in the same album. The finished product is a perfect blend of contemporary style with the elegance of classical techniques. Here are some sample images and if you want to see it in person just ask! I can’t wait to show it off!!!

About a month ago I had the pleasure of doing a Trunk Show with Claire Pettibone. Claire’s dresses are vintage inspired and stunning to say the least! I wish I would have known about her when I got married. Her new collection is entitled “Tea for Two”. I love it. How perfectly romantic! Check out the photos on Green Wedding Shoes.

Tips on affordable wedding photography

The wedding photos are often one of the largest single expenses when planning a wedding. While you can hop around to find affordable wedding photography, the lowest price is not always the best option. Before booking make sure you see some of the photographer’s past work, and feel free to ask for references. A good photographer will always be happy to let you talk to past clients about their experiences.

Here are five tips to help you find affordable wedding photography:

Book in advance:

Start looking for a wedding photographer as soon as you book your ceremony location. If you wait too long you may have to settle for the photographer you can find, rather than the one with the skills and price you want. Summer is wedding season and most weekends will be booked up shortly after New Year’s.

Choose a package:

Booking a wedding photography package, rather than just a photographer will cut down on your costs. Most photographers offer better prices when you book all of your services, like your engagement session, pre-wedding shots and retouching and albums, through them.

Watch the time:

Many photographers charge by the amount of time that you want them at the wedding site, whether or not they are shooting. Find a photographer that offers unlimited time with their wedding packages to ensure you’re not watching the clock all day and don’t get surprised with additional costs.

Request a DVD:

Your negatives or digital images are not always included in the price. That means you’ll have to go back to the photographer for reprints, which can get expensive. The cost of a reprint ranges from $10- $50 depending on the photographer. It’s also possible that you could loose touch with the photographer over time and loose access to your pictures. Ask if your photographer supplies a DVD of high-resolution images after the wedding.

Ask about add ons:

When you book your wedding photography package ask your photographer upfront for quotes on any add ons you might want like extra albums, a second photographer or photography at the rehearsal dinner or gift brunch. Booking all of your services at the same time may lower your price.

Mandy & Tim’s Cape Cod Wedding

Mandy

Mandy and I go way back to college. She and I were both Photography majors at Syracuse University. She now lives in Alaska, and works as a teacher at a school where she met her husband, Tim. Their vintage inspired wedding was set at her family’s house on Cape Cod. The setting was beautiful! Everywhere I turned there was another detail to photograph. Mandy’s dress was unlike any I had ever seen before…she bought it at a vintage store in Prague, and added parts of her mom’s wedding dress to the back of her dress, as a bustle. The bridesmaids wore vintage inspired dresses. The groomsmen wore hand made buttoniers, that incorporated Mandy’s grandmother’s buttons. Instead of a traditional wedding cake, Tim’s father hand made all sorts of delicious pies the day before the wedding. The morning of the wedding it was pouring rain outside but by the time the guests started to arrive, the sun was shining and everyone was in the wedding spirit! This was by far my most favorite wedding I’ve ever shot, partly because of Mandy and her wonderful family, but also because of all of the thought and beauty that went into every detail.

Real Wedding – Caroline & Jordan

One of my favorite weddings that I’ve shot in the last year is featured in this month’s Manhattan Bride magazine! The wedding took place in a breathtaking rooftop garden at 620 Loft & Garden, at Rockefeller Center and right across the street from St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Abigail Kirsch catered the event. The whole evening was spectacular and even better was the love between Caroline & Jordan.

Tips on Wedding Photography Prices

Wedding photography prices can range anywhere from $1,500 to $10,000, depending on what services you need and the popular demand for your photographer or your wedding date. Research wedding photography prices before you book and you will be more satisfied with your choice.

Ask your recently married friends if they were satisfied with their wedding photography prices. Look at their wedding photos and ask what services they were offered.

If none of your friends live in the area you are marrying in, check Yelp or Google for reviews of local photographers. While these sites offer great guidelines on finding good wedding photography prices remember that the anonymity of the internet offers lots of opportunity for people to embellish.

Call around and find out the average wedding photography prices in your area. Come up with a general list of the services you want from your photographer so you can get a baseline cost. This will also help you come up with a list of wedding photography prices for services you might want to think about adding on. If the average local  price is higher than you planned for in your wedding budget you may have to re-work your budget.

When you find a photographer you like ask about all of their wedding photography prices on packages, even the ones outside of your set budget. You might find that a slightly more expensive package offers all of the additional services you need for less money per service than you thought. Knowledge is power, so gather all the power you can.

The lowest wedding photography prices don’t always guarantee the best deal. Get your quote in writing, and make sure you know when the quote expires. Most quotes give you 30 days in which to book. Ask exactly what is included in the package, specifically: time on site, albums, DVDs of high-resolution images, photographer’s assistants and travel. The little details are where additional costs slip in, so make sure you have everything in writing.

Weddings!

My wedding blog has FINALLY arrived! It’s about time! In addition to my commercial work, I’ve been shooting weddings for about 7 years. I started out when I lived in LA, then moved to NY for about five years and now I am back in LA and at it again. I’ve met so many wonderful people, couples in love, interesting characters and have had a chance to be part of so many special days. I will keep doing what I do and know that I can never grow tired of it because it is ever changing and I LOVE it! So whether you are on my blog for the first time or a returning reader, I hope that you are inspired by the photos here. A good friend of mine once said that my photos are ‘the best version of real life’ and that is what I strive to achieve with every event that I photograph.
